The journey from Irish Pike to American Musky.
The Journey From Irish Pike to American Musky.
Fishing is more than just the thrill of the catch — it’s about learning, improving, and building memories on the water. Last year I had the pleasure of welcoming Peter and Greg, two anglers from New York, to Ireland for their first guided pike fishing trip with me. What started as a stormy adventure on Irish lakes has since grown into an incredible story of fishing success on both sides of the Atlantic.
Part 1: October Pike Fishing Adventure in Ireland
In October of last year, Peter and Greg joined me for a two-day pike fishing trip in Ireland. Despite the stormy weather and challenging conditions, we had an unforgettable experience on the water.
Over the course of two days, we caught an impressive 29 pike, including four trophy fish over one meter. One of the highlights was Greg’s new personal best pike, a fish he’ll never forget.
The lads enjoyed every moment of the trip — from chasing big Irish pike to learning new techniques that would later prove invaluable.
Part 2: Sunny Days, Big Pike – May Return Trip
The success of their first trip made it an easy decision for Peter and Greg to return this year in May, this time for a three-day guided trip. Conditions couldn’t have been more different — instead of battling storms, we were treated to bright, hot, and sunny weather.
Even in the heat, the fishing stayed strong, and the guys landed plenty of fish while fine-tuning their GARMIN Livescope skills. Each day on the water brought new lessons and more confidence in using advanced electronics to locate and target fish.
Part 3: Musky Success Back in the U.S.
What makes this story even more special is what happened after the trips. Back home in the United States, Peter and Greg applied everything they learned here in Ireland — from using Livescope effectively to fishing with my Mel Handmade Lures.
Before fishing with me, they had spent time with different guides in the U.S. without ever catching a Musky. But after just five days of guided fishing in Ireland, they had the skills and confidence to chase their dream fish. The result? Multiple Musky caught back home — all on the same techniques and lures they learned with me.
They’ve since shared photos of Musky landed on my lures, proof that guided fishing trips aren’t just about catching fish in the moment — they’re about gaining experience that stays with you for life.
Why Guided Pike Fishing in Ireland is Worth It
Peter and Greg’s journey is a great example of what a guided trip can do for your fishing. Yes, there’s always the chance to catch a trophy pike in Ireland, but more importantly, you leave with new skills, techniques, and confidence that you can use anywhere in the world.
Whether you’re chasing pike here in Ireland or targeting Musky in the U.S., the right guidance can make all the difference.
